Chepo

Chepo is a village in Panama and home to Saulo’s mother’s family. The village has long been a place of encounter between emancipated African slaves and Indigenous and Métis people. In Chepo, legends live: people use all kinds of spells, and they are still wary of such terrifying creatures as La Tuli Vieja, El Chivato and La Chapaleta. And it’s here that Saulo often used to visit his great-grandmother, Mama Reyes, whose life reads like magic realism.

From the blind midwife to the spiritualist healer, a whole host of characters has sprung from this mystical village and lives on in its collective imagination. Bringing together many tales and legends learned from his grandmother, Saulo invites us to step into the heartland of his ancestors.
